Daily Visits at the Farm

Members of the

Mahaska County Historical Society are admitted to the Nelson Farm grounds and Museum buildings for free during open museum hours and all events. 


Visitors to the NPFM are welcome for all events and daily visits. Please enter at the museum building unless otherwise directed.

Adults - $7.00 

Children 4-16 - $2.00

Children 3 and younger: FREE



Experience the world of a pioneer farmer at Nelson Pioneer Farm. Over a century of farm equipment and tools, plows and tractors are displayed to explore and study. 

Visit any of the century old buildings from Mahaska County that tell the story of the people that lived, laughed and worked here. Mott's General Store was more than a convenience store, it was a community.

Knots, Loops, And Other Twisted Crafts


The Farm is holding Knots, Loops, and Other Twisted Crafts on Saturday June 10th, 2017 from Noon to 4:00. Join us and learn to make rope, tie knots, chochet, knit, spin and weave, tatting, and DIY lucet. Snacks and beverages will be available as well. Ticket prices include: Adult $7, Children $2, ages 4 and under are FREE, and MCHS Members FREE. 

Farms, Brides & Buffalo Day Trip

Nelson Pioneer Farms and Blessed Byways


The Farm is taking part in a tour that starts with the story of a Norwegian immigrant, Emil Tyden, who began a farming empire in Northern Iowa. Next it will be making a stop at the Little Brown Church, which is the site of many weddings. Lastly it will stop at the Hawkeye Buffalo Ranch near Fredericksburg, where the buffalo roam on the prairie. Cost of the tour is $109.00 with a $25.00 deposit holding your spot. Dog Hollow Rendezvous

Nelson Pioneer Farm & Timberwolves Rendezvouers


Nelson Pioneer Farm and Museum is holding The Dog Hollow Rendezvous on Saturday August 5th and Sunday August 6th. Activities will be going on all day Saturday through Sunday at noon. Come and experience Frontier Crafters, Skilled Demonstrators and Hawk & Knife Throwing, all at free will donation.
