Daily Visits at the Farm

Members of the

Mahaska County Historical Society are admitted to the Nelson Farm grounds and Museum buildings for free during open museum hours and all events. 

Visitors to the NPFM are welcome for all events and daily visits. Please enter at the museum building unless otherwise directed.


Adults - $7.00 

Students 6-18 - $2.00

Children 5 and younger: FREE

Experience the world of a pioneer farmer at Nelson Pioneer Farm. Over a century of farm equipment and tools, plows and tractors are displayed to explore and study. 

Visit any of the century old buildings from Mahaska County that tell the story of the people that lived, laughed and worked here. Mott's General Store was more than a convenience store, it was a community.

Knots, Loops, And Other Twisted Crafts

The Farm is holding Knots, Loops, and Other Twisted Crafts on Saturday, June 9th, 2018 from 10:00 to 4:00. Meet the artisans of the Rope Making Guild and other demonstrators of historic and modern fiber crafts - including chair caning, crocheting and knitting, quilting, and spinning. Make your own baskets for a small fee. 

Event is free, free will donations appreciated.

Dog Hollow Rendezvous

Nelson Pioneer Farm & Timberwolf Rendezvousers

Join the Timberwolf Rendezvousers as they pitch camp at the Nelson Pioneer Farm & Museum! Experience early 19th-century life with historic demonstrations, tomahawk and knife throws, authentic food and craft vendors, music, and a passionate group of re-enactors!  Explore the buildings and museum at the Nelson Pioneer Farm in addition to the encampment. Family-friendly. Free admission, donations appreciated.

Laura's Days Family Activities - FULL for Both Days

The Farm is holding Laura's Days on Tuesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 19, 2018, from 10:00 to 12:00. Regular admission $5, Society members $2, this covers supplies for take-home crafts.  Check in at the Museum at 10 a.m.

Tuesday - Fun with the Tub & Busy Bees - try your hand at laundry with a wash board and wringer before carving your own soap and dipping candles

Thursday - School Days - Explore our one-room country school before making your own slate and chalk.

Please RSVP by July 15 to ensure we have enough supplies.

53rd Annual Fall Festival

Join our annual celebration of Iowa's Pioneer farmer at our Fall Festival!  This year's theme "Iowa's Pioneer Legacy Runs On" is inspired by John Deere's centennial of tractor manufacturing. Enjoy a full day of family-friendly fun with music, games, pony ride, old-fashioned spelling bees, hand corn picking contest, field demonstrations, food, vendors, antique machinery, and a tractor parade.

Admission:  $10 adults, $5 students, Free for kids 5 and under and Historical Society members.

Call 641-672-2989 to purchase a membership before the event. Memberships will not be sold at the gate.

Members of Friends of Mahaska County Conservation get $1 off admission.
